Archbishop meets FHL Team in Bethlehem

Archbishop of Canterbury Meets FHL Team in Bethlehem

FHL played host to the Archbishop of Canterbury today as he met with our team in Bethlehem. The Archbishop, who is one of FHL’s patrons, is on a 12 day tour of the Holy Land, and made time in his busy schedule to meet with the team and catch up on our work. After a breakfast meeting he went on to visit the home of Anwar Jakaman. Confined to a wheel chair Anwar had been living in a single room. Thanks to the generosity of FHL’s donors his living quarters were completely remodelled to suit his mobility needs.

The Archbishop said, "I am very pleased to be a patron to the Friends of the Holy Land. I support the essential work this charity is doing in the Holy Land, giving practical help and moral support to those in the greatest need."

FHL were alerted to Awar's situation in 2014. At aged 11 Anwar was diagnosed with infantile paralysis. He used to walk with the assistance of supportive boots and walking sticks. Unfortunately a fall broke his pelvis and upper leg, and his lack of muscles meant no medical intervention was available except painkillers. A year later another fall saw him confined him to a wheel chair. Anwar is the father of 5 grown up children; 4 daughters and a son, his wife has sadly passed away.  Two of his daughters still live with him, one works in a laboratory  in Beit Sahour and the other studies nursing at Bethlehem University. Anwar earns a modest income repairing electrical appliances in his workshop.
