Peter Rand looks forward to 2019
2019 will be a milestone year for FHL – in November our charity will be 10 years old. Who would have believed that the actions of a small but dedicated group of pilgrims, under the guidance of our much missed founder Michael Whelan, could have had such a profound and lasting impact?
Peter Rand writes....
"It has been a great privilege to spend the last decade with so many wonderful volunteers (not forgetting our few stalwart staff) both in this country and in the Holy Land. Everyone can be proud of what has been achieved to ‘give hope to vulnerable Christians in the Holy Land’. We began in Bethlehem, spread out across the West Bank, then into Israel, and in the last few years we have reached into Gaza and Jordan, where we support Iraqi Christian refugees.
However, with longevity comes greater responsibility. Our partners and beneficiaries are used to our support and we now have an obligation to provide sustainable and emergency help to the most needy Christians in the Holy Land. This need is set against a background of reduced donations which has been felt by many organisations in the charitable sector.
My vision for the future of FHL is that our simple objectives should reach every UK Christian regardless of denomination – increasing their awareness of the plight of our brothers and sisters, praying for them, offering them practical support and encouraging pilgrimage so they can put their hands on the shoulders of those who feel forgotten. We have made significant steps to achieve this, not least the continued evolution of our website which now provides a central resource of inspiring FHL news and location for a variety of supporter tools - but there is still much to do.
The needs of the Church in Jerusalem are as old as the Epistles, when Paul collected for the ‘poor of Jerusalem’. Almost the first obligation undertaken by the Church was to support the Church in Jerusalem and this remains as necessary today as it was two thousand years ago.
