  • Situation in the West Bank

Situation in the West Bank

The West Bank is part of what we collectively recognise as Palestine - it covers over 2000 square miles and has densely populated areas of displaced people as well as towns trying to function as best as normal, despite being so close to chaos.

Challenges for people living in the West Bank are little reported on in the media. It is becoming increasingly unsafe with settler violence, tourism has ceased, and unemployment is high.

It is reported that over 70,000 people have been forcibly displaced, for many, the third or fourth time...

As part of the ceasefire 600 prisoners were released, many of whom have returned to the West Bank. By November 2026, almost 1600 incidents have taken place including assaults, arson and road blocking. Military operations in the West Bank have killed 555 people including 102 children. 3,570 people have been injured.

Travel is extremely difficult. An estimated 185 gates are in place with 900 checkpoints. Since the ceasefire, even more roads have been closed, making travelling even more difficult… and security has tightened because of the prison release.

The tourism sector has been devastated. Approximately $2.5 million is being lost daily in tourism revenue, 60% affecting Bethlehem.

Fuel is in short supply. Unemployment is sky high at 31%, with little prospect for employment. 95% of work visas for Israel have been cancelled for the 200,000 who used to travel to work there every day. Public sector workers have been receiving 30% of their salaries for the past two years. There is no benefits system.

We have offices in Bethlehem and Ramallah. And are seeing first-hand the existing high poverty. Many vulnerable Christians are struggling to survive. We are committed to serving this vulnerable community who are very affected by the war.

FHL will invest just under £1million in support into the West Bank this year. More if we receive additional funding.
